As one of my internships for the Summer 2011 semester, I was asked to co-curate a digital drawing exhibition for New Directions in Drawing, with MAA Low Res candidate Gardiner Funo O’Kain, which was broadcast both online and as part of the Symposium at the University on May 11th 2011.

The symposium, chaired by Dr. Monique Fouquet, included speakers Diyan Achjadi, Lucie Chan, Roman Izdebski, Beth Howe, David MacWilliam, Elizabeth MacKenzie, Ben Reeves, Vjeko Sager, Durwin Talon, Renée Van Halm, and Neil Wedman.  My co-curator Gardiner and I had the challenge of sending out an international call for artists, while communicating solely through email. We received hundreds of submissions and narrowed our selection to 30 artists we felt embodied the mandate for the exhibition. I was greatly inspired by the variety, skill and creativity of the works we received. At its most fundamental, drawing is the act of making marks on a surface. This symposium aimed to explore the expanding definition of drawing, by juxtaposing traditional and non-traditional approaches to mark-making.

The New Directions in Drawing Symposium was held in honour of outgoing ECUAD Vice President Academic + Provost Dr. Monique Fouquet, who is herself an artist working within the drawing medium.

The exhibition will be available online until August 11, 2011. Also check out the recent on Line exhibition at the MoMA.
